A little known fact: Thailand is one of the few countries not colonized by the British that gave serious thought to adopting the common law . Had Thailand opted to become a common law nation the legal system would probably look very different today. Thailand is a “Civil Law” country and as a result, Thailand Real Estate law and Thai Property regulations are promulgated through the Thai Civil and Commercial Code. There are two property rights which are relatively uncommon in English speaking countries: the usufruct and superficies.

The government has introduced some new bankruptcy laws for those who wish to file for bankruptcy. That means the persons who have higher incomes can not file themselves for a bankruptcy. They have to pay at least some of their debits under this rule. Before filing for a bankruptcy, they have to get their credit analysis as per the new rule. Sometimes, it is very difficult for somebody to signify themselves in a bankruptcy case because new requirements on the lawyers are enforced according to the rule.

A few years ago now, a friend sent me xerox of chapter 5 of Derek Bok’s superb book Our Underachieving Colleges: A Candid Look at How Much Students Learn and Why They Should Be Learning More . The purpose was to get me to think about whether there was something interesting to be said about the role of philosophy in a university education. Up till that point I had been somewhat interested in issues of justice in access to university, but not very interested in what universities do, or should do, once students get there.

Are you perplexed and a little put-off by the government bail-outs for big corporations that have squandered their resources on big bonuses and corporate jets? Obama’s Home Stimulus Plan contains 75 billion dollars in stimulus money to help homeowners in mortgage trouble. Finally, here is a bail-out plan for plain, working folks! These federal programs apply only to mortgage loans on primary dwellings that are held or backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The lenders must also be on a list approved by the Treasury Department.
