Hey Zoners! I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. Here’s a look at the Colbert news from around the Interwebs, your zeitgeist for August 1st (and how did it get to be August already?). MOVITS! The huge Colbert bump MOVITS! got as a result of their TCR appearance on Monday is really paying off, as Stephen himself demonstrated in Thursday night’s Tip/Wag . August 2, 2009 My wife and I bought a home 3 years ago in California with a 1st (arm) and 2nd (fixed) mortgage. We have never refinanced. For the past 3 years we have gotten real close to being short on making payments but have never been late and are current.. but not for long. We literally have no means at the end of the month to save anything for our children or ourselves.

According to a San Jose Mercury News article by Broderick Perkins, you have until August 15 to get a free review of your home’s assessed value. Under Proposition 13, you should have received a your “Notification of Assessed Value” postcard indicating your properties assessed value. The postcard will also state if you the value has been lowered. “Lowered or not, under another tax law, Proposition 8, if you believe your assessed value is too high, you have until Aug.15 to seek a no-cost review.” Interested? If we compare from June 2008 to June 2009, you will find some interesting changes: 1). Home inventory reduced from from last year’s 228 to this year 152. The numbers of sold homes has increased from last year 57 to 51 this year. 2.) The average San Jose home sales price is lower. This June sales price is $615,337 vs last June’s ’ $797,777.

Living in Japan does have its benefit, and one of them is not knowing about one of America’s most recent fear-based fringe movements, called the “birthers”. It’s also one of the downsides. But I do find out about them eventually, as I did from Kevin Bluitt’s fine blog, http://www.bluestoneblog.com/ . Thanks, Kevin, for sending me the feed. These people, led by Russian émigré, California lawyer and dentist Orly Taitz are creating a stir about President Obama’s birth, arguing that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and is therefore not eligible to serve as president.
