A new research report out of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill looks at the impact of federal preemption of state Anti-Predatory Lending laws. The key factor was the decision by the Bush White House in 2004 to preempt state lending standards. You will be not be surprised at the net results. Without question, one of the enablers in many fraudulent mortgage lending schemes has been a crooked appraiser willing to give a property any value that the Realtor, mortgage broker, or lender wanted. The real estate bubble could not have been inflated to such a high level without the complicity of many appraisers who threw all conservatism out the window and began giving properties ridiculous values in order to help secure loans.

Australia’s raising interest rates! The global recession is over! The only question now is how strong and fast the economic rebound will be. Hip hip hooray! Not so fast. I hate to ruin the celebration. But before you throw another shrimp on the barbie, consider this. All the talk about whether or not the economy is currently in the midst of a U-shaped, V-shaped, W-shaped, L-shaped or J-shaped recovery misses the point. Sure, the recession may technically be over and stocks are rallying once more on hopes that the economy may finally be growing again.

Home prices in the Baltimore metro area were among the weakest in the nation this summer, but there are some hopeful signs for frustrated sellers, according to a new report by a real estate data firm. Prices rose a tenth of a percent in the metro area in the four months ending Sept. 25 vs. the previous three months, California-based Clear Capital said. That’s lower than all but two other major housing markets — Las Vegas and Tucson, Ariz. But you’ll notice that prices are up, not down.

A recent report from Amherst Securities Group could be good news for home buyers, assuming they have the wherewithal and personal finances to back up their search. But for the rest of the economy, the report indicates that the housing market may be in for still more of a shock in the coming months. According to Amherst, as many as 7 million pending foreclosures could flood the market in the near future, driving housing prices down. That number represents homes that have already been repossessed by lenders or are in serious danger of defaulting.

For a number of months, I’ve felt uneasy about how the Obama administration has handled the banks.
